About
2024
I'm a journalist and audio producer, and just completed a master’s degree in specialized journalism at the University of Southern California Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism in Los Angeles, focused on investigative and data reporting, multi-media storytelling and breaking news.
Born and raised in the Bay Area, CA, I grew up splitting time between North Oakland, where my family and I lived, and Marin County where my mom’s family owned and operated a small horse ranch. Between Oakland city life and Marin open space and a bit of old-school California western culture, I grew up with a deep appreciation for the complexities of identity and belonging, and connection to place, land and the natural world.
In summers of 2022 and 2023 I served as a fisheries reporter then News Director of the KDLG Bristol Bay Fisheries Report, a one-of-a-kind radio program serving the commercial fishing fleet and covering the world’s most abundant wild salmon fishery. In 2023, we were awarded Second Place for Best Newscast by the Alaska Press Club, a first for the show.
In 2023, I served as a general assignment reporter and host for KBBI Radio based in Homer, Alaska covering news of the Kenai Peninsula, Seward and the Katchemak Bay region.
From 2021-2022 I served as a general assignment reporter and host for KHNS Radio based in Haines, Alaska covering news items around the upper Lynn Canal - from COVID impacts, to local and tribal government affairs, environment and industry, and Native arts and culture - with local impact and statewide interest.
In 2020, I was the summer reporter and host of Morning Edition for KFSK Radio in Petersburg, Alaska highlighting local stories with statewide interest, from COVID impacts, the economy and fishing, to an online Tlingit class bringing Native speakers together, the uncertainty and negotiations around schools re-opening, and, by far the most challenging - interviewing summer seafood workers about their experience inside a closed campus.
From 2018 to 2021, I was the lead producer for UpFront, a daily drive-time news and public affairs show on KPFA Radio. I oversaw all production including identifying and researching news items, setting up interviews, editing and producing sound-rich segments, and coordinating with expert guests and on-air hosts - adapted to all remote during the pandemic. In 2018, the show was recognized along with KPFA as the most valuable radio station by The Nation Magazine’s Progressive Honor Roll. My favorite part of the job was mentoring interns, teaching radio production and collaborating to make their ideas come to life, and make great radio!
In 2019, I produced KPFA’s live special broadcast of the Senate impeachment hearings for President Trump, including line-production, tracking breaking news, coordinating with guests, hosts and engineers to maintain cohesive broadcasts, aired live from Oct 2019 - Jan 2020.
In 2019, I covered the Kincade Fire in Santa Rosa, interviewing evacuees in city shelters to understand and share their needs and experience.
In 2018, I assisted the North State Public Radio news team with coverage in the aftermath of the Paradise Fire, interviewing fire evacuees taking shelter at the Walmart. The NSPR news team later won a National Edward R. Murrow Award for their fire coverage.
In 2017, I worked as a summer reporter contributing to Crosscurrents on KALW Radio (91.7FM) in San Francisco, where I reported on one of the first drag queen story hours, toxins in East Bay MUD water, and an investigation into how one church group is trying to disrupt sex trafficking in East Oakland.
From 2016 - 2018, I worked as a general assignment reporter for the KPFA Pacifica Radio (94.1FM) covering breaking news from local demonstrations and direct actions, to national policy and international affairs. I was tapped to produce special live broadcasts including the live 2016 Primaries and Election Night coverage, "Free Speech" demonstrations at and around UC Berkeley. I'm was also KPFA certified radio broadcast board engineer.
In that time, I also produced tape syncs for national broadcast, including interviews for Latino USA, the BBC, NPR's Morning Edition, WNYC's Note to Self and many other podcasts.
From 2013 - 2015, I attended the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, with a master's degree in International Policy and Development with a focus on land and water rights, conflict resolution, and sustainable development. There, my research locally focused on how communities are protecting water quality in the Salinas Valley, how agricultural run-off is regulated, and solutions for the future of sustainable agriculture.
In 2012, I graduated with bachelor's degrees from the University of Miami in International Studies and Psychology, and minors in Women’s Studies and Art. I attended Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, CA.
